A setup guide that gets a developer to their first successful API call is technical writing. So is the reference page they open six weeks later when an error object contains a field they have never seen.
The two documents share a subject and serve completely different moments.
That is why a list of technical writing examples needs more than document names. Calling something a tutorial, manual, or white paper tells you very little about whether it helps its reader.

Treating all three as interchangeable "technical content" produces documents that look finished and fail at the exact moment someone needs them.

A quickstart has one job: get a new user to a small, visible success as fast as possible.
That success might be a 200 OK, a deployed worker, a stored memory, or a test event appearing in a dashboard. The result needs to be concrete enough that the reader knows the product is configured correctly.
A useful quickstart contains:
- Exact prerequisites
- The shortest supported setup path
- One complete request or workflow
- The expected output
- A small set of next steps

2. A tutorial teaches through a complete build
A tutorial takes a learner through a sequence they could not yet complete alone. The reader should finish with a working result and enough understanding to modify it.
The best tutorials define their reader precisely. "A JavaScript developer new to React internationalization" is useful.
"Developers" is not.

They need to understand message extraction, locale files, formatting, and the places where an apparently correct setup breaks once a second language is added.
I use five checks when reviewing a tutorial:
- Can the reader see the finished outcome near the beginning?
- Are all prerequisites explicit?
- Does every code sample run in the stated environment?
- Are common failure points addressed near the step that causes them?
- Does the ending explain what the reader can change next?

3. A how-to guide solves one known problem
A how-to guide serves a reader who already understands the basics and needs to complete a specific task.
"Set up Firecrawl MCP in Cursor" is a how-to. "Learn how tool use works in AI agents" is an explanation.
The first assumes the reader knows why they want the integration and focuses on getting it configured.

A good how-to guide is allowed to be narrow. Scope is a feature.

Reference documentation is the lookup layer. It describes the API, SDK, CLI, or configuration surface as it exists.
A strong API reference page includes:
- Method and endpoint
- Authentication requirements
- Request parameters and their types
- Required and optional fields
- Defaults and limits
- Response schema
- Error shapes
- At least one valid request and response
- Version or deprecation notes
The Stripe API reference is a useful public example because the prose, parameter definitions, request examples, and response objects sit close together. A developer can move between explanation and executable detail without reconstructing the contract from several pages.
Reference writing should be exhaustive and predictable. It does not need the narrative arc of a tutorial.
Readers arrive with a precise question and scan for the exact field, error, or command that answers it.
5. A concept explanation builds a mental model
Explanation content answers "why" and "how does this work?" It helps the reader reason about a system beyond one immediate task.

A list of implementation steps would not answer those questions.
Useful explanation writing normally contains:

Comparison articles are technical writing when they evaluate meaningful differences and help a defined reader choose.
My test of Claude Web Fetch and Firecrawl for web extraction compares two approaches around the work developers care about: extraction quality, reliability, control, and the kind of page each method can handle.
A credible technical comparison needs:
- A stated use case
- Selection criteria defined before the verdict
- The same task or dataset for each option
- Reproducible setup details
- Failures and limitations
- Recommendations for more than one reader profile
The weakest comparisons invent a universal winner. Engineering choices rarely work that way.
The useful conclusion sounds more like "choose A for a small static site and B when JavaScript rendering and structured extraction matter."
7. A best-practice guide transfers judgment
Best-practice content explains how experienced practitioners approach a recurring problem and why those choices tend to work.
My code review best practices guide covers a process that has no single correct command. Review size, turnaround time, ownership, and feedback quality all involve judgment.
Good best-practice writing separates three things:
- Rules that are close to universal
- Defaults that work for many teams
- Context-dependent choices
Flattening those categories creates cargo cults. "Keep pull requests small" is a useful default.
"Every pull request must stay under 200 lines" turns a situational heuristic into a fake law.
The writer's job is to make the reasoning visible so readers can adapt the advice instead of copying it blindly.
8. A troubleshooting guide moves from symptom to recovery
Troubleshooting documentation starts with what the reader can observe.
A person rarely searches for the internal name of the root cause. They search for "service will not start," "connection refused," or the exact error message printed in their terminal.

A useful troubleshooting entry follows a stable order:
- Symptom or error
- Likely causes

- Escalation or rollback
"Try restarting the service" is not troubleshooting documentation. It is a guess.
The diagnostic step is what turns a guess into a method.
9. A runbook makes operations repeatable
A runbook tells an operator how to perform a recurring procedure safely. Common examples include rotating credentials, responding to an alert, failing over a database, restoring a backup, and rolling back a deployment.
Runbooks need more operational detail than ordinary how-to guides:

- Required access
- Preconditions
- Ordered actions

The reader might be tired, under time pressure, and unfamiliar with the system. Clever prose actively hurts.
Commands, thresholds, and decision boundaries need to be painfully explicit.
Runbooks also need rehearsal. A page that has never been used during a drill is an untested hypothesis about how the incident will unfold.
10. Onboarding documentation shortens the path to useful work
Onboarding documentation helps a new employee, contributor, or customer become productive inside an unfamiliar system.
For an engineer joining a team, that can include:
- Repository and service map
- Local environment setup
- Access request process
- Architecture overview
- First safe task
- Deployment path
- Debugging and support channels
The first safe task matters. New engineers learn the system by changing it, not by reading a wiki for three days.
A strong onboarding path gets them from orientation to a small contribution with someone available to review it.

11. Release notes and changelogs support upgrade decisions
Release notes explain what changed in a product version and what the reader needs to do about it.
A useful entry tells the reader:

A technical case study documents a real starting condition, the work performed, and the result.

The evidence is inspectable
Commands, output, screenshots, schemas, measurements, and cited sources let the reader verify the claim. Practitioner writing earns trust because the proof is close to the prose.
Failure conditions are included
Happy paths are necessary and incomplete. The page should cover the failures common enough to block a meaningful share of readers.
The structure supports scanning
Headings, tables, code blocks, and ordered steps should carry information. Someone returning to the page should be able to find one answer without reading it again from the beginning.
Someone owns maintenance
Every document begins decaying once the product changes. Version history, review dates, code ownership, or documentation checks in the product workflow keep the page trustworthy.
Those checks are also the core of technical writing for engineers. Accuracy comes first.
Structure and style make that accuracy usable.
What should a technical writing portfolio include?
A useful portfolio shows range without looking random.
For a writer targeting software companies, I would include:
- One tutorial with working code
- One concise how-to guide
- One concept explanation
- One reference or documentation sample
- One comparison or decision-oriented article
- One piece that shows business impact
Each sample should state the intended reader, the writer's role, and any measurable result. A hiring manager needs to distinguish between work you researched and wrote, work you edited, and work produced by a larger team.
My own technical writing portfolio is organized by subject area because clients usually evaluate domain fit before format. A DevTools company wants to see code review, infrastructure, and API-adjacent work near the top.
An AI company wants evidence that the writer understands agents, memory, testing, and retrieval.
